Recently, I have been trying my best to downsize and get rid of decorations that no longer match our home design aesthetic. One of the things I seemed to have a lot of was glass vases. I did not want to throw them away, so I started researching different crafts or DIY projects I could do with them. An idea that really caught my eye was making them into Terra Cotta or clay-looking pieces using only paint and baking powder or baking soda! I am really happy with the end result and wanted to share the process with you! It is such an easy way to elevate the look of cheap glass vases.
What you will need:
Glass vases
Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes (small and medium)
Baking powder and/or baking soda
First, you want to pour some paint into a container. I used an old plastic bowl and some Tupperware lids that I no longer have a bottom for. Then slowly add a small amount of baking powder or baking soda to the paint and mix it with the brush.
I noticed that baking powder gave the paint a slightly more whipped and fluffy texture, and was a bit harder to apply to the glass. The baking soda created a grittier texture. Keep mixing the two ingredients until it reaches a consistency that you like. It took an entire 2 oz bottle of acrylic paint, and about 1/4 cup of baking powder or soda for each vase. I used light pink and white paint, but have some other more traditional Terra Cotta paint colors linked below.
The first coat of paint will most likely not cover the entire surface of the vase. That's okay as it will likely take 2-3 coats per vase. For the pink vase I used baking powder and it took 3 coats of paint to completely cover. The white vases took two coats and I used baking soda with that paint. Allow about an hour of dry time between coats of paint.
While applying the paint, do not worry if there is an uneven texture, cracks, or lines in the paint! This will help give it the overall clay/ terracotta look. Do not forget to paint the lip of the vase! Once the vase is dry, you are ready to decorate with them. I plan to decorate the vases with pompous grasses and will update with the picture one completed!
I hope you enjoy this easy DIY! If you do end up making them, please share them with me by tagging me on Instagram @_sincerelylovely, and don't forget to follow me for more lovely lifestyle inspiration!
