Denim maxi skirts are hot right now and I wanted to get in on the trend, but have been making an effort to be more sustainable so I decided to revisit a very old passion which is sewing and making my own clothing and repurpose a pair of jeans that I never loved the fit of.
I only wore these jeans twice and they have been sitting on my Vinted storefront for $2 for over a year so I think it's time to upcycle them. I also thought the distressed look of them would be interesting.
This is just a fun DIY project and I really have 0 idea what I am doing so I am just kind of experimenting as I go. It's also been over a decade since I last sewed anything, so this in no way a professional diy.
First I am going to open the seams all along the inside and up to right below the zipper. I am going to completely open the butt seam and cut the wait band, removing the belt loop. I will reattach it later.
The seam-ripping process was the most difficult because of how the pants were sewn together and it took me most of an afternoon to get them all apart. At one point my seam ripper actually broke and I had to use tiny sewing scissors which were not as effective and made the process take even longer, but it was worth it in the end.
Then I laid the pants out and pinned where I wanted the new seams to be while removing the excess fabric from the butt area.
Next, it's time to sew the back of the skirt together.
Finally, I am going to align the front how I want and sew that backup. I had to re-attach the belt loop in the back by hand because the denim material was too thick for my sewing machine.
I love how it turned out and think it looks and fits so much better as a skirt!
What I love about having a denim maxi skirt in my wardrobe is that it makes any outfit you would wear with jeans more unique and less basic! And it is so easy to style in any way that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
