There’s something undeniably magical about a restaurant that transports you to another era—where the dim glow of chandeliers casts a golden hue over plush velvet booths, the hum of soft jazz mingles with the quiet clinking of crystal glassware, and every dish placed before you is not just a meal but an experience.
For our 10-year anniversary and Valentine’s celebration, my husband and I wanted a night that felt as special as the milestone we were celebrating. A place where the atmosphere whispered old Hollywood glamour, the service was impeccable, and the food? Well, unforgettable.
Jeff Ruby’s Columbus was the obvious choice.
The Ambiance: A Step Back in Time
From the moment you step inside Jeff Ruby’s, you’re met with a world of opulence. The interiors are a seamless blend of vintage allure and contemporary sophistication—deep red velvet seating, gilded mirrors reflecting the soft candlelight, and walls adorned with colorful murals that tell stories of a bygone era. It’s the kind of setting that instantly makes you feel like you’ve dressed for the occasion, even if you hadn’t planned to.
The restaurant strikes a perfect balance between lively and intimate. There’s a warmth to the space, a welcoming energy that makes you feel like you’re part of something special while still having those quiet, private moments that make an anniversary dinner feel just right.
And let’s talk about the service. Jeff Ruby’s is known for its hospitality, but experiencing it firsthand is something else entirely. Attentive without being intrusive, the staff made sure every detail of our night was flawless—from cocktail recommendations to ensuring our dishes were prepared to absolute perfection.
The Drinks: A Perfect Start
We started the evening with mocktails, and let me just say, if you think a drink needs alcohol to be impressive, Jeff Ruby’s will change your mind.
I opted for the Lavender Lemon Fizz, a dreamy combination of floral and citrusy notes that felt light, refreshing, and slightly luxurious. My husband went with the Mojito Zero-Proof, which had just the right balance of minty coolness and a touch of sweetness, a special concoction suggested by our amazing and incredibly knowledgeable server. B enjoyed several delicious nonalcoholic beers as well, they have an excellent selection.
Sipping on these beautifully crafted drinks while taking in the stunning atmosphere felt like the perfect prelude to the meal ahead.
The Menu: A Culinary Experience
Jeff Ruby’s menu is a masterpiece in itself—every dish thoughtfully curated, every bite an indulgence. Here’s what we ordered:
Appetizers
I started with the Hamachi Chuukara Roll, a sushi roll that was light yet flavorful, the perfect balance of freshness and a little heat. The quality of the fish was impeccable, each bite melting in my mouth.
My husband, the traditionalist when it comes to appetizers, opted for the Caesar Salad—simple, classic, but done so well. I was lucky that he felt like sharing! The dressing had that rich, creamy texture with the perfect amount of tang, and the crisp romaine made it feel light and refreshing before the main course.
Entrées
For my main dish, I chose the Table-Side Sole Fillet, which was an experience in itself. Watching the delicate, buttery fish be filleted tableside added a touch of old-world charm to the evening. It was tender, perfectly seasoned, and had just the right amount of richness without feeling heavy (the sauce!!! chef’s kiss).
My husband, on the other hand, went for what Jeff Ruby’s is known for—the Wagyu Steak. It was everything a steak should be: beautifully marbled, expertly cooked, and so flavorful that he barely needed the accompanying sauces. He’s had a lot of steaks over the years, but this one? One of the best.
Dessert
We couldn’t end the night without something sweet, and the Butterscotch Banana Bread was an absolute must. Warm, soft, and paired with a rich butterscotch drizzle, it was the kind of dessert that makes you want to close your eyes and savor every bite. Needless to say, not a single crumb was left.
The Outfit: Vintage Elegance
For the occasion, I wanted something timeless, something that felt as special as the night itself. I wore a vintage-inspired velvet dress from Retro Stage, a piece reminiscent of 1960s elegance. The deep burgundy hue complemented the rich tones of the restaurant, while the soft, plush texture added a touch of luxury. The subtle ruching, delicate gold brooch, and tailored fit made it feel effortlessly glamorous—exactly what I was looking for.
There’s something about dressing for a moment like this that makes it even more memorable. A well-chosen outfit isn’t just about style; it’s about how it makes you feel. And in that dress, in that setting, I felt like I had stepped into a different era—one filled with romance, sophistication, and an undeniable sense of occasion.
Final Thoughts
Jeff Ruby’s Columbus is more than just a restaurant. It’s an experience, a moment in time where everything—ambiance, service, food—comes together in perfect harmony. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, a milestone, or simply want to indulge in a night of elegance, it’s the kind of place that leaves an impression long after the last bite of dessert.
As for us? This night was everything we had hoped for—romantic, indulgent, and filled with memories we’ll cherish for years to come.
If you’re thinking about booking a reservation for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, or just a night of luxury, do it. You won’t regret it.
